NASA - National Air and Space Act, 50 Years of Space
50 years ago, President Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics & Space Administration as a civilian agency in response to the challenge of the Soviet launch of Sputnik nearly a year before.
NASA became the National Air and Space Act on July 29, 1958.
