Switch-Off , Florida Into Darkness
Up to 3 million million people were without power across southern Florida on Tuesday. A problem with Florida’s electrical grid caused a nuclear plant – Turkey Point – (Located on Biscayne Bay, 24 miles south of Miami and just east of the Homestead area)Â to automatically shut down Tuesday and intermittently cut power to up to 3 million people from Daytona Beach through the Florida Keys.
Authorities said there were no safety concerns at the nuclear plant but did not specify the outages’ cause. While many areas were hit hard, most of the outages were brief and only a few hundred thousand people lacked (blackout) electricity for the evening commute home.
“We have a massive power outage in Miami, but we don’t know still the source of the problem,” Cathy Webb, spokeswoman for the Miami Dade Police, told AFP.
“There is no evacuation plan taking place around the area because it’s a power problem caused from mechanical failure in the Florida Power and Light system,” Mike Stone from the state’s emergency department told AFP.
