Burl
A large rounded outgrowth on the truck or branch of a tree.
Contains dark pith centers and many underdeveloped buds which produce a pitted “little eye: or “knotted effect” on the surface.
Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood. Some burls are highly valued and used as veneers in furniture, picture frames, household objects, automobile interior paneling and trim, and woodturning.
