Bobby Fischer, rest in peace
Bobby Fischer (b. 1943 - d. 2008)
Robert James (Bobby) Fischer (born March 9, 1943), won the World Chess Championship on September 1, 1972 and lost the title when he failed to defend it on April 3, 1975 because he refused to defend the title and the international chess federation, did not accept all his conditions for a title defense. He was considered to be one of the most gifted chess players of all time.
Garry Kasparov, the best Russian chess champion, said: Fischer’s ascent in the chess world in the 1960s and his promotion of chess worldwide was “a revolutionary breakthrough†for the chess game. But Fischer’s reputation as a genius of chess was eclipsed, in the eyes of many people, by his idiosyncrasies.
Fischer never returned in United States after his 1992 rematch with Spassky. He lived in Hungary and later in Japan, where he was detained by Japanese authorities in 2004…2005 after his U.S. passport was revoked. He was granted Icelandic citizenship, and lived in Iceland from 2005 until his death on January 17, 2008.
