Glitch mismatches photos, news on Google
Engineers at Google Inc. are working to resolve a problem on the company’s Google News site that has resulted in some photos and news stories being mismatched.
Searches conducted on Google News on Friday occasionally returned photos from Reuters Group PLC that didn’t match the stories they were listed next to, such as a shot of bunches of vegetables that appeared alongside a story about a Japanese merger firm [read more...]
Cheap Linux PCs may Rival One Laptop Per Child
As component prices drop, the aggressive pricing of commercial Linux notebooks could hamper efforts by One Laptop Per Child to supply inexpensive laptops to children in developing markets.
Asus recently shipped its Linux-based Eee PC, and Everex on Thursday said it would soon sell Linux-based PCs with an x86 processor for under US$300. Those competitive prices may draw buyers to commercial laptops over One Laptop Per Chilld’s (OLPC’s) specialized XO laptops, which will carry a $200 price tag when it ships on Nov. 12, analysts said.
OLPC, a nonprofit organization, is hoping its low-cost XO laptop will revolutionize learning for children in the developing world. Afflicted with production delays and rising costs, the XO has jumped from its original estimated price of $100 and the effort now faces pricing competition from commercial laptops. [read more...]
Google to Announce Mobile Platform on Monday
Google negotiators this weekend continue to hammer out agreements with wireless carriers, handset makers, software developers, and hardware providers, as the company prepares to announce on Monday an ambitious platform for creating mobile applications.
Although Google has declined to comment for months on its rumored move into the mobile space, sources said the company will make an announcement Monday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, and that details of the plan are being finalized this weekend. [Read more...]
MySpace in Google software deal
Google and MySpace have announced they are collaborating in a deal which could shake up the social networking industry.
MySpace has agreed to join OpenSocial, Google’s new platform designed to allow developers to build applications that will work on any website.
MySpace joins other sites including Bebo, LinkedIn and Orkut in signing up to OpenSocial. [read more...]
