Fire causes huge plume of smoke over east London
LONDON (AFP) — A large fire broke out in an old bus garage in east London on Monday, police said, sending up a huge plume of black smoke visible across the capital.
Eight fire engines with around 40 firefighters were sent to the scene, according to a London Fire Brigade spokesman.
Scotland Yard confirmed the reports of a fire on a road which is next to the construction site of the 2012 Olympic Park.
An official source said there was nothing to suggest any terrorist involvement.
Scotland Yard said there were no reports of an explosion, and witnesses confirmed they had not heard anything. “There wasn’t any bang as such,” one witness told Sky News.
“It’s absolutely huge,” said another witness who lives near the blaze. “It is one big horrendous fire,” she added.
There were no immediate reports of casualties. A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We have sent two ambulances, a fast response car and an officer to the scene.”
“The flames now seem to be under control, you can’t see them jumping up,” another nearby resident told Sky.
London, which been under high security alert for possible terrorist attacks since the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, suffered a suicide bombing in July 2005 which killed 56 people including four bombers.
